Snow Mountain Ranch - an Alpine Valley School Weekend Family Retreat

Every year most of the families from Alpine Valley School (where the kids go to school and the DH works) go on a weekend long retreat at Snow Mountain Ranch:YMCA Camp of the Rockies up near Winter Park. We used to stay in the dorms and eat in the cafeteria. That was easy and fun. Last year we missed the mark to get into the dorms and had to rent a reunion cabin. Now that we have had that experience we will never go back to the dorms. We stayed in the Legacy Reunion cabin. It has a wonderful double kitchen with two of every appliance. Enough tables and chairs for about 40 people to sit at one time. There is a large living room with many comfie counches and chairs, a loft of the same, only a bit cozier and many bedrooms.

This year it was cold and rainy most of the time. Part of what is fun is that the kids can go and do so many things without the adults having to tag along. There is the Kiva center where you can roller skate, play ball, rock climb, etc. Next to it is the pool. There is a great craft center and an old ghost town, not to mention the outdoors full of fields, forests and places to ride a bike. If you like you can go on a horseback ride, though none of us did that this trip. The kids went out and about. The adults enjoyed each other's company. We bring food to grill, to eat and to share. And we bring games - tons of them. It started off with a few simple card games and a single box of Apples to Apples. It grew into a pile of around 15 games.

The most popular one this year was "The Werewolves of Miller's Hollow."

It was so fun that we played it five times in a row and most likely would have kept playing if it had not gotten near midnight. It is a card game with a narrator. Most of the people are villiagers. A few turn to werewolves at night. Each "night" a villiager is eaten. Each "day" a person is lynched for suspecting to be a werewolf. Various villiagers have more detailed idenities such as a witch who has the power to bring people back to life, a curious little girl who can see what is going on but cannot talk about it, and a few others. It takes at least 10 people to play. It is a lot more fun than I am making it sound.

Another one that many people played was "Ticket to Ride." I could play that one over and over. A number of people liked this card game. I don't know the name of it. It drew crowds once people understood the aim of it.

Some people elected to read, do puzzles (several of thos going) or write. A number of people in our little community are creative, thoughtful writers.

Friday and Sunday I chatted, watched and played. I was worn out from a hard day at work and was feeling a bit exhausted.

Saturday morning I felt a bit more refreshed. I had visions of making a batch of home made cinnamon rolls, the cabin filled with the sweet scent of fresh bread. When Laura and I went to the store to get what I needed we were enticed with a diversion in the form of a home decor store. That led to an Alpaca fiber farm and mill. But, that is a story for tomorrow. People were disappointed that I did not make the cinnamon rolls. I thought they would not really care. I guess we all learned a bit of a lesson from that.

Saturday evening we usually have a big fire where we sing, roast marshmallows and tell stories. The constant rain made that idea uninviting. However, Ethan was dedicated to the tradition and tried his best to make it happen. I was both proud of him and a bit sad for him as he and Kennedy tried in vain to get a fire going in the downpouring rain. I love that focus and dedication my boy has. In the end he came in and became the sherif for the werewolf game, that is until he was eaten one night. He would have loved to do the fire, but he enjoyed the game, too.

Sunday we had a lovely breakfast, hung out at the craft center and then headed down the mountain to Beau Joe's for mountain pie pizza.

11. Blogger: Social networks

Today we are learning:

How to add your social networks to your blog... like in the picture below...

For FACEBOOK: There should be a button somewhere that says CREATE A BADGE. Click it and the page above will open. Now you can click on "create a NEW badge". Once you are happy with your badge, click save. Now you need to copy the code. Paste it in a HTML/Javascript gadget in page elements.

For twitter: You will find the place to create your badge on the settings tab... just under the place to enter your blog/website.

Just follow the instructions. You can customize the badge once it's in a page element! I explain more of this in the video.

Bling Out Your Blog 2.0

with Wilna Furstenberg and Kayla Aimee Terrell

A Note from Wilna
Dear Students...

First of all, thank you for taking this class. When Kayla Aimee and I started working on this class, we had no idea that close to 250 people will sign up for it. We were talking yesterday that the hours both of us spend on putting this class together will be close to 160 hours. We made 33 videos and endeavoured to provide you the most pleasurable and pain free way of remaking your blog.

That said, I know for a fact that blogging is just not that simple. The code (HTML) is like speaking a different language. It took me years to figure it all out and to come to a place where I have some knowledge. I promise you, i know what I know and not much more.

Every single class I do I put in 100%. I don't mind people asking questions. I am more than willing to help! If you have a problem, I am asking you to keep that in mind when you leave a comment stating your problem. There is really no need to be frustrated and irritated. All of us goes though learning curves. If you want to email me with a problem, please feel free: wilna71@yahoo.ca This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Please state your problem and include your blogger username and password. Once your blog is like you want it, you can change your password again.

I want to answer a few questions:

1. How long will the class be available after this week? The classroom will be up for 2 weeks. The vimeo videos will be available for at least a month after the class. So be sure to bookmark them. Personally, I will be available to help with problems THIS WEEK AND NEXT WEEK. Unfortunately, Kayla Aimee and I can not be sorting out blog problems for ever.

2. I don't want to use photoshop. I can totally understand that some people don't have/want photoshop. I think that in the class we give those who don't have photoshop some wonderful alternatives... we gave you free backgrounds to use, free banners and there's millions of free blog templates that you can download. Look at this STUNNING Blog... done with a free template. And this BLOG too...Kayla Aimee also made a video on how to make a blog banner using an online service.

3. I have ISSUES. I have fixed some problems for a lot of people in this class and I can honestly say that 80% of the time it's because they didn't read my instructions carefully. Now, sometimes one misses something. I have done that millions of times, and I have much patience with it. All I am asking, is don't be in a hurry. Take your time. Watch the videos again. Make sure you are using FireFox 3.0. Even google your question first ...And still feel free to email me! Oh, and please be sure to study the template issue lesson.

4. My blog don't look right. I don't see it as you see it. If you ARE using Firefox 3.0, it might be your screen settings. with PC: Try this: go to your blog and click and click CRTL - ( the control button and the - button at the same time) and see if that makes your screen view smaller and the margins fill in the correct places. On Mac: Go to system preferences and click display. You might want to play around with it a bit.

5. My banner is not centered anymore. You made your blog wider with the 3 column template and so your banner might not be centered. All you need to do is create a blank (transparent) image in photoshop that's 950px wide and paste your current image on it. Now make sure your image is in the center and click Merge visible. Save the new file as a PNG and upload it to your blog. Your image will be centered again.

6. The background paper I designed myself don't look right. When you make backgrounds by yourself, you must be sure to measure your blog. I will have a very brief (Not detailed) video showing you how to do it. Then you will begin the process of uploading, viewing and changing the background. Welcome to the world of blogging. If anyone thinks that I do something once and it's always right, I would thank them for such a high opinion of me and then proceed to bitterly disappoint them. I have to do everything at least 5 to 6 times before I am happy. I CAN NOT help you with designing your own backgrounds at this stage. I think that's an advanced blogger class lesson.

7. Your blog title. I completely forgot to add this little piece of information! Go to LAYOUT > EDIT HTML and you will see right in the top part of the code this line: Your title here Substitute Your title here with your blog title and you will be able to see your blog title in the tab. : )

8. it worked! No one will be prouder of you than Kayla Aimee and me when you get it right! Please tell us and show us! Tell me when you get the template to work, when you made your first banner and when you found the profile gadget again! It's just so easy to tell us your problems but I DARE you to tell us your victories. Not only for us (the teachers) but also for those that's still going though the valley. Blogging is so rewarding. Let's make it work! WE WILL HELP YOU!!!!

Check back here... i will add some more Q&A here as they come up.

Thank you both for your time and this wonderful workshop.I'm entering a new world ;) It also takes a lot of my patience and that's okay. I realized that I need more time because it's already after 9.oo pm over here in the Netherlands when the new lesson is available. On my first day off I managed to change the look of my blog and boy I was proud! I'm glad that the workshop is available for an extra week because I'll keep on trying and learning!!

Hi Wilna, yup this is a GREAT class! I get frustrated and cranky myself while doing it, because there are so many new things to learn all at once, so it helps to take a short break before coming back to it.
I was thrilled yesterday to get the new fonts into my post titles! have been fooling around with hex codes now instead of doing class work LOL
I'll get my blog link up soon if anyone wants to see it I would LOVE some comments!

Hi Wilna, just wanted to say thank you for all the time and effort you put into these classes. I floundered through the first 2 lessons, then with help from my daughter (who is also doing this class), I started to understand things. I found if I really READ through all the instructions and WATCH the videos, it is much clearer. Thanks again, Irene

Wilna, I just have to say your class is amazing! You are so thorough in your videos and screen shots. Loving this.

I have a question though. On your blog, you have photos with rounded corners. I use rounded corners and love them but it leaves the white square when I save as a .jpg. Do you save yours as a .png file? Can you upload photos to blogger in the post section as a .png? I thought only jpgs.

Thanks for your help.

How to upload the sidebar stuff... with the magic button! from Wilna Furstenberg on Vimeo.

Screenshots + Instructions

1. To upload the sidebar image to your blog, click LAYOUT > ADD A GADGET > HTML/JAVASCRIPT (aka as the magic button!)

2. Get your image from amazon (or any other place online) by right clicking the image and selecting SAVE IMAGE AS. This will save a copy of the image to your computer.

3. Upload the image now to PHOTOBUCKET. Click on the image and it will open in a window like this. Copy the HTML code. it starts with .

3. Paste the code into your HTML widget.

4. If you click "Edit Html" it will change the view to the image. In this view you can see everything thats happening there.

Rich Text

5. Now you can click and drag the image to make it smaller. You can see the pixel size of the file while you do this. This way you dont have to change the sizes of the images in a photo editing program first. SO COOL!

6. If you want to link your image, Make sure it's selected and click the little LINK Image. It will open an address bar where you can enter a web address.

7. Once you have repeated this process and you are happy with the "look" click SAVE. If you want some breaks in your code, (because sometimes HTML code just do it's own thing) use the
. It's universal code for a break.

8. I LOVE Facebook flair! Click on a piece of flair you like and right click and select " save image as". Now you can upload that saved file to photobucket and you can use it on your blog too with the magic button!

More sidebar stuff to come tomorrow!!

Hi Wilna, I used the 2 column template yesterday, but today I decided to change to the 3 column. I managed to get the background in, and the Post Titles are changed to the font I wanted, but I can't seem to get the Sidebar Titles right - they are still in the default Blogger font. I'm sure I saw something about copying and pasting a piece of code twice for the 3 column template, But I can't seem to find it. Can you point me in the right direction?
thanks a million!

Wilna, thanks for the info on photobucket. I did put text on the photo with it and add it to my blog banner. As for the second issue the pixels were right but then it said float: sendside; and I couldn't find the margin you listed. I guess that I'm a little timid about all these codes, and don't want to mess up my blog by changing or entering the wrong code. Thanks for your patience and help.

Hi Wilna,

Adding your banner to my blog was easy, but trying to figure out how to put my blog title on it wasn't. I tried to load a free trial of Photoshop, but had some kind of error, so I wasn't able to try making a banner. Using the blogger title space came out way to small and unreadable on the banner. I also had no trouble adding a facebook badge.

I like the look of the two column template. The only problem is that the sidebar is butted right up against the posts so it is hard to read without a white space between them. Sorry, to put so many things in one comment. I appreciate the lessons and have made copies of all the notes for when I become more computer savy.

Hi Wilna,

I have a booboo. I installed your 3 column template, and in the layout it shows a picture bar all the way across the top. (not the header space I had previously). I click on edit on he piture holder and upload my picture (banner) and shrink to fit. However the banner is not centered.

When you have time could you help me?

5. Blogger: Making a banner in Photoshop.

What we are doing today:

Creating a Banner in photoshop
Uploading the banner to your Page elements page
Changing the sidebar and Post title font to something you love
Adding other sidebar titles.

Files to download:
Today I am giving you a ZIP file to download. It contains all the images you see in the picture below! This is for you to download and play with it to make a pretty blog banner, following my instructions. Here's the FILE. Click on the link and follow the opening instructions as prompted by your operating system. These are PNG files which will open in photoshop but you can also open them in Word.

this BANNER is a freebie for you: DOWNLOAD... All you do is open the image in a new window and right click the image and click SAVE AS. Now you can add it to your page elements as a header. See the Video too.

Making a banner online:

Making a banner in photoshop from Wilna Furstenberg on Vimeo.

Digital elements used in this video: (All from designers digitals.com)

Mindy Terasawa: Mindy's Bunny Hop Pinstripes Papers

Lynn Grieveson: Light as a Feather

Katie Pertiet: Touch Up Paint Brushes and Stamps

Font: Pea Heather's Handwriting

More Fonts: HERE.

Making the Banner in screenshots + Instructions:

Image Above: This is how the banner will look... I made this for Louise's BLOG make-over!

1. Open a new image: Make sure that "pixels" is selected. You can see the size in the image. Blogger will fit your image to the size of your header, so you can work a little bigger!

2. Drag some patterned paper onto the blank image.

3. Drag the scalloped border onto the image. I scanned this little border in with my scanner.

4. I "colored" my little bird with some papers and feathers. Once you have done that click "merge visible". Now you can drag the bird onto the image. You will have to make it a little smaller.

5. If you look at the arrow in the image above, you will see all the layers. A great tip for first time photoshop users is this: The very first layer from the top will be the image that's in front. So, if you want to move an image to the back, like the little twig must be behind the bird, the twig layer must be under the bird in the layer bar.

6. Add some text!

7. Adjust the opacity by sliding the bar. Be sure that the LAYER which opacity you want to adjust is selected. (see the bigger arrow)

8. Now, again target the pink background layer (see right arrow) and then click your eraser tool and select a brush. Erase some of the background.

9. Once your are done click > LAYERS> Flatten image. Click SAVE AS. When you save the picture make sure it says JPEG in BOTH places where the arrow points.

4. Blogger: Adding the Background to your blog.
This video is just this part: HOW to add the background to the HTLM code.
Password: blogger09.

Adding the blogger background from Wilna Furstenberg on Vimeo.

How to add the background papers in the HMTL code:

1. To upload your newly made background papers, you need a HOST. The very best host is a private blog. So create a new blog. Name it whatever you want.

2. Under settings, make it private by clicking Permissions > Blog authors only.

3. Now Click on NEW POST. Upload the new blog background as an image to the new post. Click center and large.

4. Now, click PUBLISH POST and view the blog. IMPORTANT: Click on the image and it will open big in a new window.

5. Right click the new image and select PROPERTIES. Click properties and this little window will open. Select the LOCATION portion that will start with http://. Select it and copy it by control/command C.

Now, on the blog you want to add the background to, click LAYOUT> EDIT HTML

Look for this piece of code... and select only the http :/wilna71.googlepages.com/bacound.jpg/background-full.jpg part, then click PASTE and the address you copied from your new image will replace the old address. Now you can preview your new blog and once you are happy, click SAVE TEMPLATE. Viola! Your new background is added.

IF YOU ARE NOT USING MY HTML TEMPLATES:

My backgrounds will not fit your blog, but you can still upload an image. This where to add the code: (and here it the code in text file.)

This is probably a lame question or one I shouldn't even ask, but is changing your entire blog background to white once I have already installed your 2 column template easy? Do I just do that in photoshop?? And are you going to show how to create and implement our own headers? I have a picture I would LOVE to use as one! One more thing, this is probably routine for most people, but will we learn how to add blinkies? :) THANKS! Enjoying it all so far, even though I am sometimes still a bit overwhelmed! It's a whole new world to me!!

Hi Wilna, loving the class so far! I have two questions. Firstly, are we going to be able to have access to all the lessons you've been teaching us after the class has finished? I'm just so busy, I don't have time to do everything now!! Secondly, if we want to use parts of a digital kit to make a background for our blog, do we have to contact the manufacturer and ask to permission?
Comments (1) 6 Wednesday, 29 April 2009 09:45 Sarah Cochran
I followed all the instructions on the video and read thru all the instructions and they all worked. But the background on my blog is WAY too big. First I added the one you made Wilna and I could just barely see the inside edges of the green paper and the trees. Then I replaced the one you made w/ my photo collage and you can only see the inside edges of the photos. My blog is here: www.blessdamonsheart.com so you can see what I mean.
Are you sick of all my problems yet?

http://cratins.blogspot.com/

(I am fixing my header, lost my widgets...I will replace them later.) Or is that the way the background is supposed to be? Just wondering.

BTW: If I want to create my own header template in Photoshop what should the dimensions be? thanks ;) Sesil

Hey - I'm reading all the lessons, but am swamped with "real" homework this week, so won't get a chance to really play till later. It all looks great, Wilna, and I'm looking forward to messing around with it!
Reply 2 Tuesday, 28 April 2009 18:14 student
I'm still using my old standard template, but I'm trying to add a background. I can't find an background image code to replace. This is what my body/background codes are:

/* Use this with templates/template-twocol.html */

body {
background:$bgcolor;
margin:0;
color:$textcolor;
font:x-small Georgia Serif;
font-size/* */:/**/small;
font-size: /**/small;
text-align: center;

I've done all the other steps thus far, but I can't figure out exactly where to post the code of my background. Or do I need to upload one of yesterday's templates first? Help please!

Thanks!!

3. Blogger : Making a background in Photoshop

What we are doing today:

Making and Adding Background papers to our Blog.

As this is a very new field for a lot of you, it's the only thing on today's agenda. It will be super cool if you watch the video more than once. And even create the background paper with me. For those of you who don't want o create your own background papers, At the end of the section there is a link where you can find some to download and install in your html code. I made them with love for you!

Files to download:
These are layered templates for PHOTOSHOP elements for the blog template we did yesterday. You can download a free trial for Photoshop elements HERE.

Photoshop Template for the 3 column blog (it will only work for the New 3 column template I provided yesterday)
Photoshop Template for the 2 column blog (it will only work for the New 2 column template I provided yesterday)
If this file takes long to download try this ZIP file: http://wilna.typepad.com/blogclass/2column_background_template1.psd
How to download these PSD files: Right click and select "save link as". You will be prompted to specify a location to save the file to. This is what the file will look like when it's in photoshop:

screenshot: photoshop file.
If you did not download my templates that I provided yesterday, but you still want to add a background image, I suggest you read the following article that helped me when I started to look into adding a background image. In fact, even if you did download my templates, take some time and read the article. It will help you a great deal: Adding a blog BACKGROUND ARTICLE.

Other CUTE free TEMPLATES:
http://freetemplates.blogspot.com/

http://www.bloggerblogtemplates.com/2008/01/two-column-blogger-templates.html

http://www.bloggerblogtemplates.com/2008/01/three-column-blogger-templates.html

http://lenatoewsdesigns.blogspot.com/

The video:Making the background papers in photoshop.

Password blogger09. Please watch the video. I will explain it all again in screenshots later in the post. What I discuss in this video is how to make a page in photoshop for your blog background AS WELL AS how to upload it in the html code.

Digital elements used in this video: Lynn Grievenson (paper) Katie Pertiet (paint brushes)

FREE Backgrounds available for download HERE: http://wfbackgrounds.blogspot.com/

How to use the psd template:

1. Open the template and drag the color paper you want in to it. I used Lynn Grievenson (paper).

2. Drag the layer of the paper (layer 5 in this case) so that it is above Layer 1 copy 3 in the layers bar. Position your mouse between the layers and hold down ALT or OPTION key while you click with your mouse. This will merge the layers.

3. Now you will see the green paper forming the sides of the background papers. This technique is called masking.

4. Next you can add other elements like painting with your pencil tool (i show you the whole process in the video) or drag digi elements into your file to make it just as you want. I used trees in this case.

5.what I did here was to merge all the elements I added. the reason for that is I want to make the whole more opaque. This is a great technique to use when you design blog elements but doesn't want it to scream at your readers. If you LOVE bright colors, skip this step! What you do is hold down the shift key and click all the layers you want to merge. Right click and select "merge down."

6. Now adjust the opacity for your image until you are satisfied.

7. Flatten the image

8. And VIOLA! When you click "save as" remember to make sure you select "jpeg". There you have a custom background!

If you have any questions, leave me a comment. Also link me in the comments to your new blingy blog so that I can leave YOU a comment. Again, the only condition for me to help you would be that you watched the video and followed the instructions carefully!

I just spent a couple hours making my new background...only to put it on my blog and find that it is a small square...Where did I go wrong? Also when I click on properties on the templete that I'm using it looks different than yours so are you highlighting the http:// (spot) ? Because that is what I did. Then I clicked on preview and my new templete only sits in the center. http://photography4me.blogspot.com

I'm not at all interested in creating my own paper right now...it's too frustrating!!!!!!!!!! I can't operate PSE because I don't know how you got to the page you are showing on the video.
Very frustrated

I've followed the instructions, and it works... but when I view my page, I can't see the side background paper hardly at all. Could this be because my monitor is too small, and is cutting them off, or have I done something wrong?

Btw, I am using the 3 column template.

Thanks for your help.

Ok, I am not getting some of this lesson. I opened the template in PSE just fine. The next step is to drag the layer of paper over the template. Where do I find the layer of paper? I see it on the video but how do I get those to show up in Photoshop? I saved the Lyyn Grievenson papers on my computer, but don't see them in Elements. I'm not very experienced with PSE so maybe that is my problem. Help.....

Wilna, I do have a question though. In the example you used, there are two columns in the template that are transparent. After you uploaded it as your background, they appeared in white. When that is uploaded as the background, is the background color in blog settings filling in those transparent columns? If so, then I'm assuming that could be changed by changing the background color in the blog settings, correct?

The video was very easy to follow, however as I mentioned in another comment about the templates, I don't have PS Elements so I created a photo collage in Picasa and uploaded it to a post and then proceeded to do the same thing as you. When I got to the step where you copy/past the jpg code to the section of the HTML that reads "body background image, etc" mine does not say background-image, it only says
body {
background:$bgcolor:
I've played around with it a little bit trying to figure it out but I always end up with a plain white blog with that same photo collage as a post. What am I doing wrong?

Is the two column template much bigger than the 3 colun template. I downloaded the three column template easy enough---however the two colun template just sits there saying it loading, and loading, and loading and never downloads. I have tried several time.

but I can't even upload the 2 column or 3 column template to my practice blog. I mean, it really doesn't look that difficult, but I've even cut and pasted your html code and it still won't work.

2. Blogger: Templates
You dont HAVE to use my templates!!! : )

Choosing a template:
For this blogger class, I have custom designed 2 templates:A 2 column and a 3 column template. You can download the html code for them in the next section.

What I mean by custom designed:

* I added the code for the background. Tomorrow I will show how to make your own background in Photoshop. I have a background template that will perfectly fit these 2 custom templates.

* I made the 2 column template a little bigger so that it looks uncluttered.

* The 3 column template is based on my current blog and I am so happy with the sizes and feel of the template.

* Both templates have custom backgrounds already. You can keep it if you want. as I designed every element myself, there is no copyright.

* With blogging being such a HUGE subject, I want to stick with what I know. I can help you upload and customize these 2 options. It narrows the field for me... There's no way I can possibly know everything!

The files: This is a screenshot of how the text file looks like that you will download and install (as I explained in the video and article below)

TWO COLUMNS:
This is the 2 column template. Click here to download the 2 column HTML text file. The best way to download the file is to click the file. It will open a new dialogue box. Click save and select a place where you want to save it. This is a text edit file which open in TextEdit, Notepad or in Word. Remember that tomorrow I will show you how to make your OWN background + there will be various background designs for you to choose from and download. If you want to install the HTML code, follow the instructions carefully...(also in the next section). What's cool about the HTML text file is that I color coded the most important code that you will need to change.

THREE COLUMNS:
This is the 3 column template. You can click and save the html text file. The best way to download the file is to click the file. It will open a new dialogue box. Click save and select a place where you want to save it..

CHANGING your old template to a new one.

THIS article is copied from HERE. It's a brilliant brilliant article on how to change your blog template without loosing any widgets. I made a video that follows the instructions carefully.

Watch this video on how to change your blog template: Below in this post is a WRITTEN How to. I used it exactly.

Adding a new template from Wilna Furstenberg on Vimeo.

This article was written to provide a step-by-step guide on how to correctly apply a new XML Blogger template to your blog. This process can be tricky depending on several factors (quality of the code in the new template, your existing widgets, etc) so you need to be careful when changing your template. Don’t worry though, just follow our step-by-step instructions below and we’ll hopefully get you through it without much pain.

Many people make the same mistake when installing a new blogger template. Most problems when installing a new template are caused by the blogger widgets (Page Elements) that you’ve spent time setting up in your previous template. Almost all Blogger templates available for download on this site are in the new Blogger xml template format so if you’ve downloaded the template from us, it’s going to be much easier to follow our instructions.

Step #1 - Backup Your Current Template

Backup your current Template just in case you make a mistake. This is very important so you can always go back (click on the screenshot to the left to see exactly how this is done). You’ll want to navigate to the “Template” => “Edit HTML” section of Blogger and then look for the “Before editing your template, you may want to save a copy of it. Download Full Template“. Click on the “Download Full Template” and save it somewhere easy to find later on your computer. We are not responsible for any mistakes you make in applying your new Blogger template. Once you have saved this .xml file onto your computer, move on to step #2.

Step #2 - Take a Screenshot of Your Page Elements
This next step isn’t necessary but I like to do it anyhow. Take a screenshot (YOU CAN USE YOUR CAMERA TOO) of your “Page Elements” page just so you know exactly what widgets (Page Elements) you had before applying the new template (an example of the exact page you should take a screenshot of is in the image to the left). If you blow away all your widgets and you don’t remember which ones you had, this screenshot will at least help you remember. If you’re unsure as to how to take a screenshot, then check out this quick tutorial (MS Windows).

Step #3 - Make a temporary placeholder for your widgets
Next, we’re going to essentially make a temporary placeholder for your widgets (Page Elements) within your current template. You should still be in the “Template” => “Edit HTML” section of Blogger so if you’re not, go back to that section.

You’re going to actually edit this template code now so pay close attention. Look for the following piece of code which is all the way at the bottom.

Now you’re going to replace that code with the following bit of code: (Look for this line in the article then you dont have to type it out... you can just copy and paste it.)

Save your template and you’ll see this message (which is a good sign):

What did we just do? We created a brand new widget (Page Element) in your current Blogger template so we can move all your widgets over to keep them safe! Next navigate over to the “Template” => “Page Elements” section of Blogger and you’ll see a blank new footer section.

Drag all your widgets (Page Elements) that were going to be deleted (we wrote them down or took a screenshot in step #3). The order doesn’t really matter as long as you’ve moved them all down into the widget (top image on left). After you’re done, it should look something like this (bottom image on left):

Now click on the “Save” button and the temporary placeholder for our widgets will be saved. We’re not done quite yet but if you’ve gotten this far already you’ve done great! The hardest part is over. Now we’re going to copy the widgets we just protected over to your new template. Hold off on that bathroom break and let’s keep going.

Next, go back to the “Template” => “Edit HTML” section of Blogger and scroll down in the template code and look for the line of code you added before:

There should now be a bunch more code in between it which will look something like this:

This is a list of all your widgets (Page Elements) that we just moved into the footer. You want to select all this code and copy it. We’re going to paste it into our new Blogger template code which will complete the transfer safely.

Now open your new Blogger template xml file in a text editor (you can use Notepad/ Text Edit, just right click -> Open With -> Choose Notepad). Once you have it open, scroll all the way down to the bottom of the code and look for the following code:

You’re going to replace this code with the new code you just copied above. Make sure you only replace that one bit of code otherwise you might run into some problems. Save your new Blogger template and you’ve finished transferring your widgets (Page Elements) into the new Blogger template!

Now after all that work just to save your precious widgets, let’s hope the new template works ok in Blogger. Go back to step #3 above and upload your new template like you attempted to do before. If all goes well, your new template will properly save and your blog will be updated!

Step #4 - Move Your Widgets Back To Their Original Spots
I’m assuming your new template installed without and problems and you’re ready to move your widgets (Page Elements) back to their original spots. This is just the reverse process of what we did before by going to the “Template” => “Page Elements” section of Blogger and moving them out of the footer and back into the sidebar (or wherever you originally had them in your old template).

After you arrange them to your liking, make sure to save and view your blog. If all went well then your blog should be looking the way it did before the new template was applied (well, except for the new beautiful design which is the main reason for this hassle in the first place right?).

Summary
Congratulations on adding a new custom Blogger xml template to your blog! The whole process should have taken anywhere from 15 minutes to 1 hour depending on your experience and comfort with blog template code, the code quality of the new template, and the number of widgets your blog currently has. Blog designs shouldn’t have to change very often so hopefully this is a one-time process for you. If not, I recommend you bookmark or add this page to your favorites so it’s easy to find the next time you decide to change Blogger templates.

A few things to remember when you change your template: (As discussed in the template video)

Take some screenshots of your current blog. That way you can always re-create a look or list you loved.
Download your current template.
DON'T BE AFRAID to change your template. You will NOT loose your blog post content.
With the place holder method you SHOULD NOT loose any widgets... if you do... DON'T WORRY! It's easy to re-create and fun to give your blog a spring clean. I do this at least once a year!
If you want to change your templates today so that we can start blinging them tomorrow, it will be cool. If you have any problems, leave me a comment and I will help you!

The only condition for me to HELP is that you SHOULD HAVE watched ALL the videos and read all the instructions!

Template issues.

Template ISSUES!
Hey girls! Thanks for all the comments and questions! A few have been having some template issues and I thought to quickly do a post about it and provide some screen shots to fix it.

But first: some dont's

DO NOT:
DO NOT Use the temporary placeholder for your widgets if you have a new blog or only a few widgets... it's for those people like me with LOTS of baggage!!!!!! It will be just too frustrating for you.
DO NOT Use the temporary placeholder for YOUR PROFILE, ARCHIVE, FOLLOWERS or any other widgets that you can just add again with blogger.

1. After you have placed your widgets in a temporary place, it will look like this on your page elements page. PLEASE NOTE: you can see that there is a PROFILE, ARCHIVE, FOLLOWERS widget in there that should not have been dragged there!

BACK UP THE OLD TEMPLATE.... you can select all the HMTL code and copy and paste it into word,

2. Now go to the HTML code and copy ONLY the code that pertains to the widgets.

3. Open your TEXT file with the new template code and look for this piece of code that's highlighted in the picture above.

4. RIGHT underneath it, paste the widget code you just copied.

5. Click preview template. If you get a error code like this one: where there is more than one widget with the same ID, look for the widget with that ID and just give it another number. For instance in this case there was more than one widget eith the name IMAGE 1. so i looked for image 1 and changed the 1 to a 3. (big arrow)

Click SAVE template. This warning will come up, but click CONFIRM and SAVE.

If you have any issues, please leave me a comment in this lesson. If it worked for you, let me know as well.

Hi Wilna,

the quintessential Baobab tree, in it's two seasons, is PERFECT!!!

I am just waiting for PSE to d-o-w-n-l-o-a-d so I can grow them on my blog. THANKS so much.

It is all looking good so far, except that the text size is quite small on my blog and I don't seem able to go in and change it via the settings. P.s I am finding this class really fun.....ty :)

i battled with these issues, but by fiddling around, i managed to fix them. fortunately, there is always the backed-up template, so if there is a problem, you can start over.

i found that you have to drag the widgets right to the bottom, to the lowest open space, below the block that says 'add a gadget'. then the lines of code are also at the bottom of the template.

thanks, i had fun learning this!

I'm not sure what I did but my comments are showing up in the first column clear down at the bottom as well as the middle column. I think it is in the html code but I didn't change anything that I know of. My blog is at http://myplayart.blogspot.com/

Hi,
I'm having trouble loading the new template. I got as far as as getting the list of widgets into my old template, but when I open your 2 column template to trasfer them, there is no matching line you mentioned at the bottom. Did I do something wrong when I downloaded the template?

The videos were great..thanks. My blog is very bare in regards to posting. I was able to load the 3 column, move gadgets, etc. I'm just not sure it looks like it is suppose to. The trees look cut off and the graphics (squares) at the top are missing. Does this look right to you? At least I understand what to do....just not sure if something is wrong.

I watched the video and did step by step what you did. Except I omitted the saving your widgets stuff because my blog doesn't yet have any widgets. I did end up updating my template to the 3 column one, however there is nothing on either side of the outside columns. Just white space. I read in a column above that these files were made in Elements and they are Photoshop files and wont open in any other program. I don't have Elements and I've already done the free trial and can't do it again. Is this my problem or have I done something else wrong?
Reply 8 Tuesday, 28 April 2009 18:36 student
I can't get the template to download. When I tell it to open with Word it tells me that I have a dialog box open that I need to close, and I don't think I do. It shows me the install list in a small box but I can't get it to download. I don't have photoshop so I won't be able to make my own. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Missy

OOps--I posted a comment/question elsewhere...sorry about that.

I have an existing blog but have decided to completely start fro scratch with this class (just seemed like fun...ha, ha). Anyway, I copied your three column template and everything came through ok..however I noticed there is no header in the template. Will we be covering headers later on in the class?

Hi Wilna,

Thanks for your great instruction. This seemed easy enough to follow, but I've run into a problem. I watched the video and then followed all the steps but after I copy and pasted the code for the 3-column template into my edit html box (after saving my widget info as you outlined in the video), I press "save template" and I get the following response: "We were unable to save your template. More than one widget was found with id: Image1. Widget IDs should be unique."

So I looked through the list of widget code at the end of the new template to see if there were two labeled Image1. There's only one, so then I tried deleting the code for that widget but I got the same "unable to save" response but this time it says there are duplicate widgets labeled BlogArchive1.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong or how to fix this? Thank you in advance for your help.

Jenn Bertman

I'm having trouble loading the new template. I got as far as as getting the list of widgets into my old template, but when I open your 2 column template to trasfer them, there is no matching line you mentioned at the bottom. Did I do something wrong when I downloaded the template?

The videos were great..thanks. My blog is very bare in regards to posting. I was able to load the 3 column, move gadgets, etc. I'm just not sure it looks like it is suppose to. The trees look cut off and the graphics (squares) at the top are missing. Does this look right to you? At least I understand what to do....just not sure if something is wrong.

Again, thanks for the videos.....you are GREAT!

Mine was not so successful. I worked on it for an hour and keep getting this message.
Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly.
XML error message: The element type "body" must be terminated by the matching end-tag "".
I tried taking my widgets out all together and no go. HELP! I did it step by step with the video.
